Welcome to Behind the Wheel with Phil LeBeau. This is the place where you'll hear the latest about what is happening in the auto industry, and the reason why that news is so important. This is not the place to come if you are looking for cheerleader for one automaker over another.  Phil won't wave the flag for any company, but he will let you know when he thinks someone is making the right moves, and when they've screwed up.

Philip J. LeBeau is a CNBC auto and airline industry reporter based at the network's Chicago bureau. Prior to joining CNBC, LeBeau served as a media relations specialist for Van Kampen Funds in Oak Brook Terrace, IL. While at Van Kampen, LeBeau held a Series 6 license for securities transactions.         The Nikkei 225 finished up 0.2% at 9,808 Monday, but volume was down at a 6-week low. Fast Retailing, Suzuki Motor, and Kubota were top gainers, but major power companies were among the hardest hit. Makiko Utsuda from The Nikkei has more.

It's still going to face a very difficult future ahead," Graeme Maxton from The Insight Bureau said. "This doesn't mean that the auto sector has turned around."
