Contest Stocks: The Good, Bad And Ugly

Here's the latest on what you're doing with stocks for the contest--and what they're doing to you!! It's pretty much dominated by earninngs news, both good (LLTC) and bad (YHOO, ESLR). The most active and widely held lists remain the same. And a stock we took a closer look at yesterday, Seagate, had an impact on another stock--and not for the best. Here's the breakdown:

Best performing trades by % gain from Tuesday's close to Wednesday's close:
Linear Technology : If you bought on Tuesday at $32.12 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $36.04, the contestant gained 12.20% on the trade. Earnings beat expectations.
Overseas Shipholding: If you bought on Tuesday at $61.49 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $67.84, the contestant gained 10.33% on the trade. The sector was up on news of the buyout of OMI by Teekay Shipping, and market feeling is that the sector is undervalued.
Melco PBL Entertainment : If you bought on Tuesday at $16.69 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $18.31, the contestant gained 9.71% on the trade. IPO'd on 12/19 with an offering valued at $1.1B, and its Crown Macau casino is scheduled to open in May.
Champion Enterprise : If you bought on Tuesday at $9.89 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $10.76, the contestant gained 8.80% on the trade. Champion, a maker of prefabricated-housing swung to a first-quarter loss on Tuesday with the downturn of the housing market, but expects to return to profitability in the 2nd quarter, and for 2007.
Jefferies Group : If you bought on Tuesday at $28.71 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $31.04, the contestant gained 8.12% on the trade. Earnings beat expectations.

Worst performing trades by % loss from Tuesday's close to Wednesday's close:
Yahoo : If you bought on Tuesday at $32.09 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $28.31, the contestant lost 11.78% on the trade. Disappointing earnings.
Evergreen Solar : If you bought on Tuesday at $11.90 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $10.64, the contestant lost 10.59% on the trade. ESLR was downgraded by Merriman Curhan Ford.
Intevac : If you bought on Tuesday at $26.73 and held/sold on Wednesday with a close of $23.91, the contestant lost 10.55% on the trade. IVAC fell on fallout from Seagate's disappointing earnings on lower prices for hard drives. We looked at Seagate a little bit on Wednesday, with an interview by the CEO.
