Contest Stocks Reap Benefits From M&A Talks

Here's our latest contest "stock report." Dow Jones certainly proved a big winner with the unsolicited takeover bid by Rupert Murdoch. But DJ wasn't the only stock benefiting from M&A talk--as you can see. Meanwhile, earnings took their toll on the worst performers. There's a couple of new names (MOVE, ENTG) on the most active list--while the widely helds remained the same.

Best performing trades by % gain from Monday's close to Tuesday's close:
Dow Jones: If you bought on Monday at $36.33 and held/sold on Tuesday with a close of $56.20, the contestant gained 54.69% on the trade. Up on News Corp bid at $60 per share.
Community Banks of PA: If you bought on Monday at $23.63 and held/sold on Tuesday with a close of $32.12, the contestant gained 35.93% on the trade.--after CMTY agreed to be acquired by Susquehanna for $860M in cash and stock.
MAF Bancorp: If you bought on Monday at $40.15 and held/sold on Tuesday with a close of $54.44, the contestant gained 35.59% on the trade--on news that National City (NCC) agreed to by MAF for almost $1.9B in stock.

I2 Technologies: If you bought on Monday at $25.46 and held/sold on Tuesday with a close of $17.77, the contestant lost 30.20% on the trade--down on weak earnings.
Bruker BioSciences: If you bought on Monday at $11.51 and held/sold on Tuesday with a close of $9.17, the contestant lost 20.33% on the trade--down on earnings that did not meet expectations.
Liz Claiborne: If you bought on Monday at $44.72 and held/sold on Tuesday with a close of $37, the contestant lost 17.26% on the trade--down on weak earnings.
