U.K. V. Bentonville, Europe tries to One-up Wal-Mart at Its Own Game
Tesco's Fresh + Direct will be opening in the U.S. in November. The company, which is the U.K.'s answer to Wal-Mart , will be launching first on the West Coast and is remaining mum regarding its expansion in the rest of the country. Company spokesperson Greg Sage wouldn't elaborate on when or if they plan to come to the East Coast. Right now, the company is focused on Phoenix, L.A., Las Vegas and a few other West Coast markets.
The U.S. stores will be 10,000 square feet and for the "price-conscious" consumer. The company spokesperson says that there is no target audience: "We are a broad church."
Hmmm... it will be interesting to see Tesco take on Wal-Mart and other grocer discounters when the company opens its doors stateside. The company says that since the BBC and other world press is so anxious for interviews and information surrounding Tesco's entry into the U.S., the company is declining any "preferential" treatment of press. Translation: get ready for a press gaggle and media onslaught that is more P.R. than substance. Hopefully, one day Tesco's CEO will join us on CNBC to talk financials and strategy.
By the way, I'm headed to Ireland this week for some vacation time. I won't be posting, but check back on August 20 when Retail Detail resumes! In the meantime, I'll check out Tesco in the Emerald Isle and get back to you all.
