Low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways said Wednesday that it had named Chief Operating Officer Russ Chew to the post of president.

Chew, 54, succeeds Chief Executive David Barger as president of the discount airline.

Chew joined JetBlue in March as COO. Previously, he spent four years with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration as its COO.

Barger had been the company's president since 1998. He took over as CEO in May, as part of a move by the carrier to improve operations after major weather-related service problems in February.

The snafu cost saw the cancellation of nearly 1,200 flights and cost the company more than $30 million.
