S&P 500 Leaders & Laggards: RDC KEY

NEW YORK - Shares of Rowan Cos. rose on Friday and helped send the Standard & Poor's 500 index to a higher finish, as the price of oil set a new all-time record.

Rowan rose $2.82, or 6.5 percent, to $46.09, and set a 52-week high. Late Thursday, the offshore contract drilling services company declared a 10-cent quarterly dividend.

Driller XTO Energy Inc. rose $3.99, or 6.3 percent, to $66.96.

BMC Software Inc. rose $2.22, or 6.1 percent, to $38.65. The business software company said fiscal fourth-quarter profit rose 55 percent because of licensing and professional services revenue growth.

The S&P 500 rose 1.78 points to 1,425.35.

On the losing side, KeyCorp declined $1.37, or 5.5 percent, to $23.72, following an analyst downgrade.

Regions Financial Corp. shed $1.15, or 5.4 percent, to $20.17.

Liz Claiborne Inc. retreated 92 cents, or 4.7 percent, to $18.62. In a note to investors, Goldman analyst Adrianne Shapira cut department stores to "Neutral" from "Attractive," expecting high oil prices to hurt discretionary spending.
