Keepin' It In The Family

Thursday night on The Big Idea…you know the companies and you know the brands, but you may not know the families behind them.  Tonight, you’re invited to join the family…the husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles who do business together…to find out what makes them tick and how they made their fortunes.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of family-run restaurant chain Chick-Fil-A and the company is quickly approaching $3 billion in sales.  Truett Cathy opened the first store in 1946 and has grown to more than 1,345 stores today.  Truett’s son, Dan Cathy, is now President and COO of the company.  Also tonight, the family behind Mary Kay Cosmetics reveals the lessons they learned from the original founder, Mary Kay Ash…who started the business from her kitchen table using her $5000 life savings.  In 2006, sales reached $2.25 billion at the wholesale level.  And it wouldn’t be a family business show without meeting the adman who laid the groundwork for what later became Deutsch, Inc…that’s right, Donny’s own father!
