PT Bank Mandiri

Agus Martowardojo is currently the President Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PT Bank Mandiri (Persero), Tbk, the largest bank in Indonesia. He was appointed CEO in May 2005, and was tasked by the shareholders to turnaround the bank, which was facing tremendous challenges as its nett NPL ratio increased significantly to 15.3% from 1.6% the year before. Besides the NPL problem, employee's morale was at all time low as the bank's reputation at that time was tarnished by accusations of corruption amongst its senior officers.

He immediately took steps to "stabilize" the organization and also developed the 5-year strategic roadmap of the bank to become the so-called Dominant Multi-Specialist Bank - a bank that is able to capture between 20-30% of the revenue pools in each of its customer segments through distinctive strategies. By being a Dominant Multi-Specialist Bank, Bank Mandiri is on track to become a Regional Champion Bank - a bank which is able to compete and respected by its peers in the South East Asian region by 2010 with market capitalization in excess of US$10 Billion.

Under his leadership, he managed to reduce the nett NPLs of the bank from 15.3% in December 2005 to below 5% from March 2007 onward through focused restructuring and collection efforts. During the same period, the bank is able to grow its loan book with quality exceeding industry standard. The market value of the bank has increased from around Rp. 33 Trilliun in May 2005 to above Rp. 70 Trilliun in Nov 2007. The bank also receives a number of prestigious awards, including the Asia Money Awards for the Best Corporate Governance and Best Transparency, and the Asia Pacific Customer Service Excellence Award 2007 (along with other industry leaders like CIGNA and Sony). Within Indonesia, Bank Mandiri is also recognized as one of the top 3 banks in customer excellence - the only State-Owned Bank that manages to achieve that status for two consecutive years. Mr. Martowardojo himself has received the best Chief Executive award from the Asian Bankers Journal, the best executive in Indonesia from Asia Money, and the best CEO from Anugerah Business Review.

Mr. Martowardojo is a very experienced and seasoned banker with experience for more than 20 years. Prior to his current assignment at Bank Mandiri, he was the CEO of Bank Permata that led its successful divestment. He was also the Managing Director in Bank Mandiri from 1999-2002, CEO of PT Bank Export-Import Indonesia, and CEO of PT Bank Bumiputra.

He also serves as the Chairman of Himbara (Association of State-Owned Banks), Chairman of the Indonesian Bankers Association, and Divisional Chief of Banking and Finance in the Indonesian Chambers of Commerce.

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics from the University of Indonesia and has attended various executive education programs at Harvard and Stanford.
