At Toyota Motor Corporation, Development and Production were the core activities for which Dr. Shuhei Toyoda was responsible. As a Chief Engineer, he was responsible for the development of the first generation of Yaris (in Europe) / Vits (in Japan), the major global sales success for Toyota. Following this achievement, he took on the challenge to lay the foundations of Toyota's business in Europe, as a single entity, leading from his position of President & CEO of Toyota Motor Europe. Some main targets were strengthening the regional governance company in Europe, as well as establishing its manufacturing subsidiaries in France and Poland.
Dr. Shuhei Toyoda joined Toyoda Boshoku Corporation in June 2004. In October of that year, the merger of Toyoda Boshoku Corporation, Araco Corporation and Takanichi Corporation was the step-stone of today's new Toyota Boshoku Corporation. His aim is to lead Toyota Boshoku into "becoming a truly global company that can succeed worldwide, developing into the world's top level automotive interior system supplier and filter manufacturer". To achieve this, Dr. Shuhei Toyoda intends on sharing and using the experience gained at Toyota, while showing strong leadership.
In 2007, Toyota Boshoku Corporation has 68 overseas subsidiaries in 21 different countries. It is growing into one of the top ranking automotive interior and filter makers. Nowadays, Toyota Boshoku Corporation is building its new manufacturing plants in Russia, Canada and Mississippi - U.S.A., this in order to respond to the global expansion of its main customer, Toyota. On the other hand, Toyota Boshoku Corporation is moving ahead on other OEM businesses, such as General Motors.
Stating the company's management philosophy as being "to contribute to society by developing leading-edge technologies while manufacturing high-quality products", Dr. Shuhei Toyoda aims at achieving the best QCD (Quality, Cost and Delivery) by continuous Kaizen (improvement) and strict quality management/control. In parallel, when it comes to globalization, Dr. Shuhei Toyoda established the principles to follow and is at present strengthening the function of regional governance companies in four different regions: the Americas, Asia & Oceania, China and Europe. The aim is to build up a Global Management Structure over the four regions.
Sales figures of Toyota Boshoku Corporation in 2004, just after the merger, amounted to 750,000 million yen ($6,356 million, $1 = 118.05 yen). In 2004, our 2010 sales goal was put at 1,000,000 million yen ($8,470 million). This sales target was already achieved in 2007, quite ahead of plans. The revised medium-term business sales plan of 1,300,000 million yen ($11,012 million) for 2010 will be achieved one year earlier. Because of this, Toyota Boshoku Corporation has decided to uplevel its challenges and to revise its sales target to 1,400,000 million yen ($11,859 million). This increase represents almost twice the sales results of 2004. The scale of the sales increase is quite exceeding plans.
In order to support a continuous evolution of the company and to support its growth, Dr. Shuhei Toyoda is keen on promoting a number of activities and behaviors:
- Development of innovative technologies and products, which will lead to customer-satisfaction;
- Production with constant high quality at an affordable price;
- Establishment of QCD (Quality, Cost and Delivery) as number 1 framework in each region;
- Continuous Kaizen (improvement) such as process and production reinvention.
In his private time, Dr. Shuhei Toyoda is interested in astronomy and Backgammon. Keeping informed of the new discoveries in the world of science is something that he likes to read about. Of course, he shares his hobbies and interests with his three children and looks forward to the day he will be able to share the foundations of Toyota Way with his granddaughter, once she is older. Dr. Shuhei Toyoda and his wife live in Japan, in the city of Toyota.
