Buglabs makes the BUG, a collection of easy-to-use, open source hardware modules, each capable of producing one or more Web services. These modules snap together physically and the services connect together logically to enable users to easily build, program and share innovative devices and applications. The company promises: “With BUG, we don't define the final products - you do.”

What’s with the name?

Originally coming from the desire NOT to have a technical name, Semmelhack wanted to go off the beaten path. He still wanted it to be easy to remember… and got the idea from the fact that the company could be a “bug” in the system of consumer electronics. Also, the idea that 85% of all species are insects was appealing – maybe there weren’t a lot of one particular species, but all together bugs make up 85% of all species. In addition, BUG makes a nice acronym… Build Useful Gadgets.

Where did the idea come from?

After September 11th, Peter wanted to be able to find his family at any time – so he wondered why there wasn’t a way to send GPS information to cell phones or to PDAs.
In October 2001 he simply couldn’t get the idea out of his head. He kept thinking about the fact that he couldn’t access information that he wanted. He felt like he was always buying devices that didn’t serve all the functions that he needed and wanted… so he did what all great innovators do … he took it into his own hands and developed a prototype.

So what’s next for Buglabs? Can this Big Idea make it to the next level? If there’s any way to get it there, it’s through CES and the Big Idea is taking him there.
