It's a make-it or break it time for retailers. The holiday selling season is always a critical time for retailers, but this year this may be even more true. With several retailers already falling victim to a drop in consumer spending, and filing for bankruptcy, retailers will be navigating through some tricky waters. Consumers are strapped for cash due to high energy and food prices, and unemployment is rising. The recent credit crunch has made it more challenging for retailers and consumers to borrow.

This blog will look at the winners and losers in the retail space. Who has the right strategy to capture consumer dollars? It also will look for trends in consumer spending and how that will impact the economy.

I'm On Market Duty For Today

The consumer, spending and just where this market is headed right now are the main focus of everyone on the street. I'm down at the COMEX today watching how metals trade in reaction to the selloff we saw overnight in Asia.

Given the emergency rate cut, there's a lot going on in the pits today. When I'm off this market duty, I'll post on retail detail.

Lots of interesting nuggets from the ICR xChange conference. Once again, that gathering of CEOs and analysts was great. I got a lot of email responses to the posting on American Apparel and my interview with Dov Charney. Lots of opinions from readers on that one. Since this is a blog and a forum for discussion--I love hearing from you all. I'll post your responses when I'm back in the office. Good luck trading out there.
