NEW YORK - Shares of real estate investment trusts traded mostly higher early Tuesday along with the broader market as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said turmoil in the financial markets has eased.
Bernanke said during a speech at the Atlanta Fed's Financial Markets Conference that turmoil has eased somewhat, but the situation is still "far from normal." He noted some improvements in the markets for certain mortgage-backed securities, such as those backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as some fixed-rate mortgages and corporate debt.
How shares of some REITs performed shortly after the market opened:
SL Green Realty Corp. rose 4 cents to $95.60.
Brookfield Properties Corp. added 4 cents to $20.48.
Boston Properties Inc. gained 22 cents to $99.71.
Kimco Realty Corp. fell 19 cents to $40.60.
