NEW YORK - Shares of broadline retailers fell Friday, as the broader market slid amid investor concern about the rising price of oil and mortgage lenders Fannie and Freddie Mac.

The Dow Jones industrials, which had been down more than 250 points earlier in the session, at times moved back into positive territory. Stocks pared steep losses on reports that the Federal Reserve has told mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac they can borrow money from the central bank if necessary.

Here's how broadline retailers fared on Friday:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., down 92 cents to $56.29.

Target Corp., down 15 cents to $44.74.

Costco Wholesale Corp., down $1.03 to $69.83.

BJ Wholesale Club Inc., down 42 cents to $39.61.
