Commander Planet: Hybrids

If you’re looking for a trade but can’t help worrying that the future of our planet is in peril, who you gonna’ call? Commander Planet!

Following is the report filed by Fast Money’s Trading Superhero, Pete Najarian. (In case you’re wondering, yes it’s supposed to be a little tongue in cheek.)

******

I am Commander Planet. It’s Green Week. So my mission is to search the Earth, high and low for the cleanest trades out there that could make you some fast money to boot. Tonight we look at the hybrid car craze.

Running on a combination of electricity and gasoline, hybrid vehicles release virtually no green house gas emissions and use fuel more efficiently than standard car engines.

You might have heard that these cars are quite popular in Europe but did you know they’re also gaining ground in America? Hybrid sales in this country soared 44% last year and accounted for 11% of domestic new car sales, total.

And remember those electric cars? Well. General Motors and Toyota plan to profit from the trend by introducing battery run versions of the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius by 2010.

But it’s Daimler who may have the best technology of them all. Its Mercedes Blue Tec engine, which uses diesel fuel in a clean way, will be available for models beginning next year.

******

Seriously Pete, how do you recommend trading it?

I really like Daimler [DAI  Loading...      ()   ] and Honda Motors [HMC  Loading...      ()   ] for their clean diesel engines.

Or look at Energy Conversion Devices [ENER  Loading...      ()   ] because they make the batteries as well as EnerSys [ENS  Loading...      ()   ], another battery maker.
