BRASILIA, Brazil - Brazil says it will start sending electricity to Argentina on Saturday to help meet demand as the Southern Hemisphere winter approaches.

The Energy Ministry said Friday that Brazil will begin shipping 300 megawatts and increase the amount in coming weeks.

Energy Minister Edison Lobao agreed last week to send Argentina up to 1,500 megawatts to stave off shortages.

Argentina pledged to pay for part of the power and compensate for the rest by sending electricity to Brazil at year's end. Argentina struggled to meet energy demand last year during an unusually cold winter.
