Trading Michael Eisner’s Brain

Typically the presentation of new TV shows for fall (called “upfronts” by the industry) is the hottest thing going in May. At these star-studded events TV stars and media moguls rub shoulders with advertisers as the network offers a sneak peak at their complete line-up. Networks usually spend millions in an attempt to generate excitement and secure ad dollars up front, ahead of premiere week in September.

But this year the upfronts were a little subdued. The writers’ strike combined with online competition for ad dollars has left network’s rethinking their business model. Which trends could make you money as the digital revolution unfolds. Here's what CNBC’s Michael Eisner, host of Conversations with Michael Eisner, has to say.

Following is a synopsis of the main points made by Michael Eisner during his interview on "Fast Money."

What’s the feeling at the upfronts this year?

It’s like it’s always been. They’re still presenting and selling to advertisers for both network and cable, replies Eisner. It’s just a little quieter.

Then let's talk movies. What’s going on with the new 3D technology?

There is a real bump on 3D, replies Eisner. The problem is that there are only 1,000 3D movie theaters and only 5,000 digital movie theaters. The question is, will there be enough 3D theaters for all that’s being made? I believe if you show it, they will be built.

Anything else?

I think the whole area of on-demand will be very important going forward. I think it’s much more valuable than rental because the margins are better. Analog is yesterday’s news.
