Asia Business Leader
of the Year 2007

"The centre of gravity of the global economy continues to shift in favour of the Developing and Emerging world. This shift has occurred to such an extent that we can today talk with credibility about living in a “bi-focal world”. What makes this even more exciting is that Asia has incontrovertibly been a major driver of this shift. Asia’s time has truly come.

It is exceptionally important that the place of leadership as an essential element in powering and sustaining the growth of Asia is recognised and constantly celebrated. The ABLA reaffirms Corporate Asia’s rightful place in the global business community and recognises the enormous economic and social impact that business leaders are collectively making in Asia.

I was very honoured to receive the award in Seoul, Korea, on behalf of all my colleagues in Unilever Asia. In Unilever, we combine global scale and capabilities with strong roots in local communities. This is underpinned by a commitment to develop and nurture local talent that is truly world class. We also passionately believe that we can do well by doing good and this is key if business has to be relevant in the society in which it operates. It was an exceptional privilege to be a recipient of this high honour - I wish those who will appear next on this distinguished list in the years to come, the very best."
