On a down daw for the markets and with the exception of the S&P 500, the month of July finished with the major US indices showing modest gains. The Russell 2000 led the group up 3.6% for the month followed by the Nasdaq, up 1.4%.
- Leading the Nasdaq 100 for the month was UAL Corp [UAUA  Loading...      ()   ], up 59% for the month.
- Freddie Mac [FRE  Loading...      ()   ] weighed the most on the S&P 500, down 50.2% for the month

On the Sector front, Financials rallied back this month, gaining 6.8%. Healthcare also had a strong month, up nearly 5%.
- Bank of America [BAC  Loading...      ()   ] led the Financials, up 37.8% and Teva's [TEVA  Loading...      ()   ] purchase of Barr Pharmaceuticals [BRL  Loading...      ()   ] lifted BRL up 46.4% for Healthcare.

For Commodities, the story was the big drop in energy prices. Oil was down 11.7% and Natural Gas was down 32.0%. Sugar was amongst the top performers, up 5.88%.

The dollar strengthened in July against the Euro and Pound, while the Swiss Franc gained 2.61% against the greenback.

MBIA Inc (MBI)      Up 1.54 or 35.08%
Amgen Inc (AMGN)     Up 15.47 or 32.80%
Sovereign Bancorp Inc (SOV)    Up 2.16 or 29.35%
QLogic Corp (QLGC)     Up 4.25  or 29.13%

Fannie Mae (FNM)     Down -8.01 or -41.1%

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp (COG)    Down -23.72 or -35.0%
CONSOL Energy Inc (CNX)    Down -37.98 or -33.8%
Akamai Technologies Inc (AKAM)   Down -11.45 or -32.9%
XTO Energy Inc  (XTO)     Down -21.28 or -31.1%
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD)   Down -1.62 or -27.8%
The EW Scripps Co (SSP) Down -2.65 or -27.69%

Correction: Fluor Corp (FLR)  was incorrectly listed as    Down -104.73 or -56.3%.  The correct numbers for FLR are Down 11.69 or -12.6%
