Is Major League Baseball Having Contractions?
Posted By:Darren Rovell
Sectors:Media

With the economy in the dumps, more radio hosts have brought up the word contraction to me this past week than the past five years combined. But the "C" word gained a little bit more traction on Sunday when respected New York Daily News columnist Bill Madden wrote a piece entitled "A's, Marlins could be goners as contraction looms."

What's confusing about the article is that there are no sources cited. Madden recounts the recent failings of both the A's and the Marlins to get their new stadium deals sealed and even quotes another columnist on the issue. Then the piece has A's general manager Billy Beane answering baseball questions and not even addressing the contraction allegation.

The A's and Marlins are not in good shape. We know that. But we're told by a baseball official that the word contraction hasn't really been mentioned for seven years, when the league gave up on trying to jettison the Minnesota Twins and the Montreal Expos.
