Among the sector activity stories for Thursday, Oct. 16, from AP Financial News:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Shares of insurance companies mostly fell Thursday afternoon as the broader market fluctuated and Chubb Corp. became the latest insurer to disclose third-quarter losses.

NEW YORK (AP) — Airlines shares rose in a choppy market Thursday, lifted by falling oil prices, positive outlooks and optimistic analyst comments.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Shares of many oil and gas services providers fell along with crude oil prices Thursday, and a Morgan Keegan & Co. analyst downgraded a dozen companies on concerns about capital spending cuts.

DENVER (AP) — Shares of mining companies sank Thursday as gold prices for future delivery fell and stocks continued their decline.
