The market research firm shows Mac unit sales were up 19 percent compared to September of last year, and up 23 percent compared to August of last year. Analysts had expected something closer to 17 percent, even though perennial Apple bull Piper Jaffray was hoping for a number closer to 23 percent.

Still, the NPD retail numbers suggest Mac units sold on the quarter of between 2.7 million and 2.8 million Macs this past quarter, and as I indicated in an earlier post, analysts were anticipating 2.7 million Mac units sold. Bottom line: Mac unit shipments, according to NPD, for all three months of the September quarter were slightly ahead of the Street expectations.
On the iPod side of the equation, NPD reports a 7 percent, year over year increase in September quarter unit sales, suggesting 11 million iPods sold during the quarter, and again, ahead of Wall Street expectations.
A few more nuggets to digest ahead of Apple's Tuesday earnings report.
