New Book Asks "The Three Big Questions For A Frantic Family"

The Big 3 questions For a Frantic Family

You know the mother of all fights is going to take place immediately after a husband says to his wife, “If my clients ran their companies the way we run this family, they’d be out of business.” Uh, yes – them there are fighting words – get ready for shock and awe AND TV dinners!

But strip away the emotion, the truth of that statement very fairly sums of the lives of millions of us. Too many of us are great out of the house – excelling at multitasking, charming clients and bosses, exceeding our quotas and proving to all that we are indeed bonus worthy – BUT the minute we put the key in the front door – we’re inept at best. Chaos rules the roost!

Patrick Lencioni has spent years traveling the world as an executive coach for Fortune 500s highest and mightiest. Over the years he has heard these execs say their most important job is their family – but even those in the C-Suite confess their home lives are chaotic, stressful and at times, overwhelming.

Lencioni, the New York Times bestselling author of many management books including “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” “The Three Signs of a Miserable Job” and “Death by Meeting” - has left the office turning his attention to the family to write, “THE 3 BIG QUESTIONS For a Frantic Family A Leadership Fable About Restoring Sanity To The Most Important Organization In Your Life.”

The book is written in a fable format that features the bone-headed husband I wrote about at the beginning - but in all honesty each of us can see our own frazzled lives on the pages (Like the time I showed up with my twin 4 year olds at a party only to find out that the party had already taken place - the week before!! Or the time I showed up for back to school night only to find out I was a week early! Or the time -- ok, enough, you get the point - we all lead crazy, hectic lives).

Lencioni says there is a clear link between running a successful organization and running a family. While subordinates at work are not the same as children ((REALLY, they’re not?)), parents are the managers - they still need to build trust, entertain healthy conflict, inspire commitment, hold people accountable and focus on results. Families need a clear plan with focus and constant communication.

Today we’re more frantic and overwhelmed because well, c’mon life right now is more frantic and overwhelming. Lencioni says there are more opportunities and distractions than ever; more social expectations and families can’t seem to say “no” to anything. And our lives are even more stressful now that we’re all obsessed with a global financial crisis where millions face losing their jobs or homes - fear prevails from sea to shining sea.

So with so much out of control – Lencioni offers an opportunity to bring control back where it’s needed most - at home! Lencioni lays out a recession-proof business plan that can bring order and meaning to the most important organization in our lives - our families.
