WOONSOCKET, R.I. - Drugstore operator CVS Caremark Corp. said Thursday it will debut a new savings program in which customers can get 90-day supplies of many generic drugs for $9.99.

The company said the Health Savings Pass program will cost $10, and members will be able to buy supplies of more than 400 common generic maintenance drugs for $9.99. A 10-percent discount at CVS MinuteClinics will also be included for clients who pay cash. The program will begin Nov. 9.

CVS Chief Executive Tom Ryan said the program will help consumers, particularly the uninsured and underinsured, during a difficult economic period. In the company's conference call he noted that many of CVS' rivals have similar savings programs.

CVS also reported its third-quarter results Thursday, and in morning trading, its shares rose $2.20, or 8.4 percent, to $28.51.
