MASSENA, N.Y. - Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. is cutting about 100 jobs from its northern New York plants.

The company says the job reductions in Massena — near the Canadian border about 160 miles northeast of Syracuse — are part of a companywide effort to reduce costs because of plummeting aluminum prices.

Aluminum prices dropped from $3,300 per ton in July to about $2,150 today.

Alcoa says the cuts will be gradual and will involve attrition where possible. The company recently announced about 115 job cuts in Tennessee and about 600 in Texas.

Separately, Oneida Indian Nation officials say they're cutting as many as 100 jobs at their resort and casino in Verona. Officials say a downturn in gambling is behind the cuts.
