WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug Friday to treat patients with overactive bladder, a disorder that causes frequent, uncontrollable urination.

Toviaz, made by German manufacturer Schwarz Pharma, helps relax the bladder muscles, reducing the urge to urinate and accidental leakage. New York-based Pfizer will distribute the once-a-day pill.

Overactive bladder treatments already on the market include Allergan's pill Sanctura, and Watson Pharmaceutical's Oxytrol, which comes in a patch.

The FDA said it approved Toviaz based on the results of two studies involving more than 1,000 patients with the disorder. Both studies showed the drug reduced the number of times patients had to urinate per day, and the number of leakage accidents per day.

Side effects reported with the drug included dry mouth, constipation and dry eyes.

Shares of Pfizer Inc. added 28 cents to $18.14 in afternoon trading.
