SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa is cutting 16 jobs, including 10 newsroom positions, to reduce expenses amid declining advertising and a deteriorating economy.

Publisher Bruce Kyse told employees Friday that the newspaper could not support as many employees because of the decline of classified advertising and the loss of retail advertisers such as Mervyns and Linens 'n Things.

After the cutbacks, the newsroom will have about 70 positions, down about 30 percent from its high four years ago.

The Press Democrat is owned by The New York Times Co.
