PORTLAND, Ore. - Columbia Sportswear Co. said Tuesday it is eliminating 75 jobs — about 4 percent of its U.S. work force — as consumers cut back on discretionary spending and orders for the company's outdoor gear slip.

The outdoor clothing and footwear maker said orders for the spring are down about 11 percent, forcing it to "better align our planned spending with those realities."

"We have approached this decision thoughtfully to ensure that we are able to continue investing in our expanding retail store platform and increased marketing," President and Chief Executive Tim Boyle said in a statement. "Although difficult, we believe these actions will ultimately strengthen the company and position us well for when the economy recovers."

Portland-based Columbia has about 1,800 U.S. workers.

Its shares rose 73 cents, or 2 percent, to $36.88 in trading Tuesday.
