PITTSBURGH - Drugmaker Mylan Inc. said it has received approval to market a generic version of UCB's epilepsy drug Keppra, and has started shipping the drug.

Mylan, based in Canonsburg, Pa., said the Food and Drug Administration approved its application to market generic versions of the drug, also called Levetiracetam, in 250 milligram, 500 mg and 750 mg tablets. It said U.S. sales of Keppra totaled about $1 billion in the 12 months ended Sept. 30.

The U.S. patent on the drug will expire in January 2009. UCB, a Belgian biopharmaceuticals company, will maintain the exclusive right to market Keppra for pediatric use until that time.

Mylan shares fell 9 cents to $9 in after-hours trading, after rising 32 cents, or 3.7 percent, to close at $9.09 during the day session.
