Maryland sportsmen seeks halt to wind turbines
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Some hunting and fishing enthusiasts in western Maryland are seeking a moratorium on wind power development in the mountainous region.
The Allegany-Garrett Sportsmen's Association has asked the boards of commissioners in the two westernmost counties to hold public hearings on the health and safety impact of wind turbines, as well as their effect on tourism and neighboring property owners.
No wind farms have been built in the state, but the state Public Service Commission granted a proposed 28-turbine project an exemption from power-plant licensing requirements last week under a new law aimed at accelerating wind power development.
Other wind-power developers are expected to seek such exemptions.
