Peru invites President-elect Obama to APEC summit
LIMA, Peru - Peru's foreign minister has invited President-elect Barack Obama to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit held Nov. 22-23 in Peru.
Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Belaunde says that he isn't sure if Obama will be able to attend as president-elect.
Belaunde says President George W. Bush plans to attend the summit and hold a private meeting with Peru President Alan Garcia. Peru hopes to implement a free trade pact with the U.S. by early 2009.
The summit is an annual forum promoting trade and investment between 21 Pacific Rim countries like China, Russia and Japan.
Belaunde told Andina state news agency Thursday that Peru hopes to sign a free trade pact with China during the summit.
