American Firsts
2008 was year of historic achievement. Americans elected their first African American president. Barack Obama becomes the nation's 44th president with a term beginning January 20th, 2009.

American swimmer Michael Phelps captivated the country with his incredible performance at the Beijing summer Olympics. Phelps won 8 gold medals for a career total of 14 Olympic gold medals, the most by any Olympian.
