While I was away on vacation, my producer Tom Rotunno wrote about Anthony Davis and how much he loves Nike [NKE

] . Although Davis said he was the first college and pro athlete to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in Nikes and that he still had a relationship with Nike, the shoe company told us that he was no longer contractually affiliated with them.
While it might be accurate that Davis was the first college and pro athlete to appear on Sports Illustrated in Nikes, he actually wasn't the first athlete in Nikes on the SI cover. That honor belongs to Chris Vennum, who at the time was a 14-year-old high school female athlete from Ontario, Calif., whose specialty was the 440-yard dash.
The date of Vennum's cover is May 28, 1973. Davis' appearance in Nikes on the SI cover came more than 17 months later.
