COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has approved a rate increase for Columbia Gas, the state's largest natural gas utility with about 1.4 million customers in 60 counties.

In total, Columbia customers will pay an extra $47.1 million per year. The company had wanted $87.8 million.

The increase covers delivery costs and will be phased in over two years. The cost of the natural gas itself was not an issue.

The new pricing formula reflects a higher share of delivery costs covered by flat fees and a decrease in the share that is based on gas usage.

The PUCO action will increase the monthly customer charge from $6.50 to $12.16 in the first year, and to $17.81 in the second year.
