DETROIT - In a full, front-page editorial being sent to every member of Congress, the Detroit Free Press is urging lawmakers to offer a "hand up" to save Detroit's automakers.

The newspaper on Friday wrote that more than 3 million jobs are at stake and a failure of one or more of the Michigan-based automakers would deepen the country's worst recession in 27 years.

The chief executives of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC are in Washington seeking $34 billion in aid to keep the companies from collapsing by year's end.

The editorial is titled, "A Message to Washington: Invest in America."

Free Press editor Paul Anger wrote that a newspaper needs to inform but there are times when it "needs to speak up for what's right."
