The Asian Attraction

Many bottoms have been called but one thing is certain, volatility will continue to plague the markets into the first-quarter, according to Salman Haider, MD & head of wealth management at Citibank.

In such an environment, Haider advises long-term investors to inch out of cash and into equities in Asia as they are currently valued at very attractive levels.

“We think there is a lot of fiscal and policy stimulus that’s undergoing at the moment. And within that (referring to equities), we like the EM space, net-net we are also overweight Asia.  Within Asia, Korea, Hong Kong, (and) Taiwan,” says Haider on CNBC Asia’s “Protect Your Wealth”.

Sector wise, Haider favors telecoms, utilities and financials. But he believes one should take a very cautious approach to investing and keep a close watch on developments in the commodity space as well as the impact of the U.S. recession on the rest of the world.

“We think that the commodities correction has been a good one because it has allowed a lot of macro economic space," explains Haider. "But (if) the U.S. housing doesn’t correct itself, U.S. consumers doesn’t start spending again, then you are looking at a very prolonged recession. And that could really hurt clients across the board as it would hurt equity markets as well."
