It’s awfully quiet out there today. The major indices are noodling around without much interest in doing anything significant. Yup, that’s usually what happens the day after Christmas. Back on the trading floor, on days like this we used to run out of crossword puzzles at about 10:30. Then the talk about lunch heated up. On a Friday, one of my favorites was the fish sandwich at Brokers, a cafeteria/deli in the Board of Trade building. It was a stack of fried fish pieces about 6 inches high on a big hamburger bun. With cheese. The trick was balancing all the little cups of tartar sauce you needed to make it through the whole thing. I don’t know how much they weighed, but they were substantially delicious. Once, years ago, I was challenged to eat two in an hour. I did, without regrets.
Next week’s economic data: Redbook and consumer confidence on Tuesday; jobless claims, NAPM-Chicago, and crude oil and gas inventories on Wednesday. Markets are closed on Thursday for New Year’s Day.
