The World on Sale

As the global economy continues to slump, the travel industry worldwide is slashing prices at a pace not seen in a generation. Peter Greenberg, our resident travel expert, shares these deals:

-Go north. In Canada, the U.S. dollar is worth 20% more than it was a year ago. Add that to a weakening economy for our neighbors to the north and you’ve got ski resorts across the country cutting prices across the board. You can get anything from free lift tickets to ‘kids ski free’ deals if you plan a vacation at many of Canada’s best mountain resorts.

-Go south. Sandals Ocho Rios resort in Jamaica is currently selling all-inclusive vacations for a remarkable 55-60% off normal prices. If you book by Jan. 15, you can lock in these deals for the entire year.

-Gimmicks work. LastMinuteTravel.com is holding a promotion later this month where it will open its site for 15 minutes a day, five days a week to give away an inventory of 15,000 hotel rooms for $1 per night. The catch is that you don’t know when they will open, so you have to constantly be checking. Gimmick? Sure, but if you can get a night in a nice hotel for a buck, who’s complaining?
