NEW YORK - The second night of "American Idol" delivered an unexpected gift to Fox.
Its audience was virtually the same as the first night (30.4 million on Tuesday, 30.3 million on Wednesday), and ratings were up among the younger viewers about whom Fox cares the most.
Fox attributes the development to good word of mouth about the first night. For the past four years, the audience declined from the first night to the second — by 3 million viewers in 2008.
"We're thrilled," said Mike Darnell, chief of alternative programming at Fox.
Darnell said it's an early indication that viewers are embracing Kara DioGuardi, the new fourth judge, and Fox's effort to make the tryout shows seem less harsh.
"You can talk and talk about the creative changes," he said. "What you need is the word of mouth."
