Publishers Weekly is out with its first ever "Top Ten Best Books of 2009."
Each year the trade magazine selects its top 100 - but this year, PW dug deeper and picked 10 titles that it said stood out from the rest.
They are:
- The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science by Richard Holmes (Pantheon)
- Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon (Ballantine)
- Big Machine by Victor LaValle (Spiegel & Grau)
- Cheever: A Life by Blake Bailey (Knopf)
- A Fiery Peace in a Cold War: Bernard Schriever and the Ultimate Weapon by Neil Sheehan (Random House)
- In Other Rooms, Other Wonders by Daniyal Mueenuddin (Norton)
- Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi by Geoff Dyer (Pantheon)
- Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann (Doubleday)
- Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford (Penguin Press)
- Stitches by David Small (Norton)
These 10 and the other 90 titles that fill out the Top 100 Books of 2009 were chosen from more than 50,000 books and were selected based on PW reviews editors.
In a release Louisa Ermelino, Reviews Director, PW said, “We wanted to pick the best 10 and we came ready to mix it up, and although we were surprised that, when the dust settled, it wasn’t the most politically correct list—there are no women authors, for example—the balance of our top 100 reflects a remarkable diversity.”
The full list will be featured in the print magazine and online on Monday, November 2nd at www.PublishersWeekly.com/bestbooks09.
