Bauxite company in Jamaica to lay off 150 workers
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A bauxite company in Jamaica says it will cut 150 jobs because of the global financial crisis and a drop in demand for bauxite and alumina.
St. Ann Bauxite Limited says the cuts represent 20 percent of its work force and will occur in the next couple of months. The announcement comes days after Alumina Partners of Jamaica said it would lay off 250 people for the same reasons.
Company officials did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
St. Ann Bauxite was bought in 2004 by U.S.-based Noranda Aluminum Inc. and Century Aluminum Co.
The news was published Saturday in The Jamaica Gleaner.
Jamaica is one of the world's largest producers of bauxite. It is the chief ore used in aluminum.
