"Squawk Box" Co-Anchor

Joe's pee smells after he eats asparagus.

That's what he announced to me, and the rest of the world, on Squawk this morning.

It wasn't completely out of the blue. We kind of pushed him there. By "we", I mean me and Linda Avey, the co-founder of 23andMe. 23andMe is a personal genomics company that collects your spit and discovers your genetic makeup.

I know, it's a bit of a jump from spit to Joe's pee. But stay with me.

It's All in the Genes
Discussing genetic test kits, with Linda Avey, 23 and Me co-founder

The spit test shows all kinds of things about you ... most importantly things like the kinds of diseases you could be susceptible too. But your genes also determine more mundane things too, like whether you can roll your tongue, or whether you can smell asparagus in your urine.

That's where Joe comes in! He's one of the chosen people who have this special ability.

Update

Joe Weighs In ...

I sent Joe a copy of the blog post about how his pee smells after he eats asparagus. He sent back this:

"Asparapee ... And I can smell other's... The dreaded 2nd hand asperapee."
