HOLLAND, Mich. - Hudsonville Ice Cream said Monday it is voluntarily recalling its Candy Bar Whirl Ice Cream amid the expanding national salmonella outbreak linked to a Georgia peanut butter plant.

The ice cream that is being recalled is in 64-ounce containers and has the UPS code 70438 10250 8. It was sold in Michigan stores including Meijer, Family Fare, D&W, Harding's Market, L&L Food centers and others.

The ice cream contains pieces of nuts that were processed in the Blakeley, Ga. plant of Peanut Corp., which is currently the focus of the salmonella outbreak.

Hudsonville Ice Cream has not received any cases of reported illnesses related to the ice cream. The recall doesn't affect any other flavors.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

At least 529 people have been sickened as a result of the current outbreak, and at least eight may have died as a result. More than 430 products have been recalled.
