Publix, others recall peanut butter products

NEWPORT, Ky. - Companies on Tuesday continued to recall products which contain peanut butter ingredients which may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. At least 529 people have been sickened as a result of the current outbreak, and at least eight may have died as a result. More than 430 products have been recalled.

Publix Super Markets issued a voluntary recall for Publix Premium Peanut Brittle No Sugar Added Light Ice Cream.

To date, there have been no reported cases of illness, but the product contains peanut products that are from Peanut Corporation of America, which has been implicated in a national outbreak of salmonella.

Trauth Dairy said Tuesday it will voluntarily recall eight-ounce cups of Trauth Deluxe Peanut Caramel Crunch ice cream printed with a date of Nov. 25, 2009, or earlier. Trauth Dairy also is recalling half-gallon squares of Trauth Deluxe Peanut Caramel Crunch ice cream printed with a date of Nov. 25, 2009, or earlier.

Both products contain peanut ingredients that may contain salmonella, but Trauth Dairy has received no reports of illnesses related to the affected products. No other Trauth Dairy products were involved in the recall.

The products were distributed in parts of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois through numerous retailers.

Separately, Broughton Foods said it is voluntarily recalling 56-ounce scrounds of Broughton Premium Peanut Caramel Crunch ice cream printed with a date of Jan. 1, 2008, or later, also because of the possibility of salmonella.

Broughton Foods has stopped distribution, though it has received no reports of illnesses related to the affected product. No other Broughton Foods products are involved in this recall.

The recall involves units distributed in parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. The Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration have been notified of the recall.

Meadow Gold Dairy in Orem, Utah also is recalling 56-ounce scrounds and round pints of Meadow Gold Herd of Laughter Tin Can Alley ice cream printed with a "BEST BY" date of January 1, 2008, or later and Universal Product Code (UPC) of 041191234805 and 041191033668, respectively.

The affected products contain peanut ingredients supplied by Peanut Corporation of America which may be contaminated. Meadow Gold Dairy said it has received no reports of illnesses related to the affected products. No other Meadow Gold Dairy products are involved in this recall.

The recall involves approximately 27,000 units of the 56 ounce scrounds and about 10,300 units of the round pints. The affected products were distributed in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Eastern Oregon and Northern Arizona through numerous retail outlets.
