NEW YORK - A Pfizer Inc. cancer drug has received a tenative recommendation from a review body of U.K. National Health Service, reversing previous guidance.

The recommendation means the service's review board has found the drug Sutent cost-effective for treating kidney cancer that is advanced or has spread through the body.

In draft guidance released Tuesday, the U.K.'s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence said it is still reviewing three other drugs but is not recommending them as a first-line treatment: Genentech and Roche's Avastin, Bayer's Nexavar and Wyeth's Torisel.

The institute had previously said in August that all four drugs could extend lives, but that the pricey drugs were not cost-effective.

The institute noted that Pfizer has agreed to provide the first cycle of Sutent to the health service for free.
