Newbos: The Rise of America’s New Black OverclassNewbos: The Rise of America’s New Black Overclass

WHO WILL BE AMERICA'S NEXT BLACK BILLIONAIRE?

Currently, there are only two black billionaires in the U.S...media mogul Oprah Winfrey and entrepreneur  Bob Johnson.  Johnson became the first black billionaire in America when he sold his company, Black Entertainment Television, to Viacom in 2000 for an estimated $3 billion. Who will be America's next black billionaire from the NEWBO class?

Brian from Texas says:
After watching Newbo’s on CNBC over the weekend Lynda and myself were inspired to see fellow minorities aspiring to uncharted business territories amongst corporate America. As fellow minority entrepreneurs, we operate an independent wealth management firm along with a tax-consulting firm in Texas. Great segment, keep up the informative broadcasting......

Thomas from New Jersey says:
I liked the piece on these influential African-Americans.  Kudos to you Mr. Hawkins and I can't wait to read the book. My only concern and this may be addressed in the upcoming book, but so many times we address these larger then life characters, but what about the top African-Americans that are not involved in sports or just the numerous African-Americans that are part of the financial industry and trying to work their way through. I believe there should be more pieces done on these individuals.  To not only show middle class America that we belong, but also to show younger African-Americans that they do not have to be an entertainer or athlete to aspire and obtain a level of wealth.

Marianne from Maryland says:
Congratulations to Lee Hawkins.  What a great documentary.  A topic a lot of us always wanted to know more about; please make sure he does more documentaries for CNBC.  I would love to see more from him.  Also, this is the second refreshing, non-boring, non-combative piece you've had that I really enjoyed; the other was Trish Regan's documentary on the dog show,  very entertaining and informative.  It's getting tiring and old to hear and watch all that doom and gloom.  Please have these two great journalists keep making documentaries for us viewers.  Thank you.

Stephanie from Ohio says:
I truly was not that impress with the responses of those interviewed. I personally think when we do acquire wealth we do have a responsibility to give back, and I do not think that is being done enough in today's society among the African American wealthy we should be creating employment that help the disenfranchise. Even sharing their knowledge with others or or starting grass root organizations that make a difference in the inter city giving our children opportunity to be exposed to things that they may not get in school.

Meela from Massachusetts says:
Lee you did a great job last night!  I must admit I’m 38 years old and grew up listening to rap but I normally cannot stand to listen to today’s rap songs.  I often find some of the lyrics vulgar and just plain old stupid. However last night I walked away from this special having an appreciation for the Cash money guys who have made an incredible name for themselves.  I really liked the question about why does someone need 15 cars because I too always ask that question.  And I was surprised to hear that it was not just about flaunting their wealth but instead is intended to inspire today’s youth to reach for the stars.  Thanks for the insight and opening my mind to the things that I don’t often see.

Roderick from North Carolina says:
I loved the show immensely.  I watch CNBC all the time and have been looking forward to material such as this. Please put on more shows like this.

Corey from Georgia says:
I liked the show I think it was a good mix; we need more shows like this for African American youth.

Hope from Florida says:
Thank you for taking the time to put such a piece together.  While the show was entertaining and worthy of our time, I am left with a feeling of disappointment regarding the lack of "newbos" outside of the athletic and/or entertainment field. Where was Mellody Hobson besides the intro?  Thus adding more fuel to the broad societal view that this is the only way blacks can be successful and once again allowing our children to see this as the only way "out".  Perhaps I misunderstood the meaning of newbos but I don't think this is a fair view of the community that I know of which I am proud....but I am hoping there is a part II.  Good Luck with the book!

Melissa from Nebraska says:
I loved the show, my only critique is that; there were no women. You guys are really on top of things so I know that there was a really good for this oversite.

Sam from New York says:
Lee Hawkins is simply amazing. His interviewing tactics are very sincere and intriging. I'm eagerly awaiting the next great CNBC documentary. Thanks!

D from New York says:
I really enjoyed the Newbos special however it could have gone a little deeper...with an additional hour of course! More importantly where were the Newbo women?
Keep 'em coming Lee. It's a pleasure to watch you and your work on CNBC.

Gregory from Texas says:
As an African American husband the father of 3 daughters, I am very proud of Newbos program. Lee Hawkins artfully guides Americans through the little known and often misunderstood world of African American wealth. I salute Lee Hawkins and CNBC for airing this superb program. As an African American, I was more proud of our accomplishments in the face of adversity and oppression.
