Major European share indexes were expected to open higher on Friday, with sentiment seen slightly improving on news the U.S. administration was working on a new programme to subsidise mortgage payments for troubled homeowners.

London-based spreadbetters expected Britain's FTSE 100  to open 54 to 63 points higher, or as much as 1.5 percent, Germany's DAX to open 64to 80 points up, or as much as 1.8 percent and France's CAC-40 to open 44 to 65 points up, or as much as 2.2 percent.

Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 1 percent, snapping a three-day losing streak, while Europe's FTSEurofirst 300 closed 1.5 percent lower at 791.69 points on Thursday.
