In early afternoon trading the Dow Jones Industrial Average came within 1 point of its November 20, 2008 closing low.  As we are getting close to these November lows, here are some key dates for each of the major indices, both on a closing and intraday basis:

Dow

  • Last time the Dow [.DJIA  Loading...      ()   ] closed below 7,552.29 was on 03/12/2003.  It closed at 7,552.07.
  • Last time the Dow crossed below its intraday low of 7,449.38 on 11/21/08 was 03/12/2003.  It hit an intraday low of 7,416.64.
  • The last time the Dow closed below:
    7,500 = 10/09/2002 when the Dow closed at 7,286.27
    7,200 = 10/27/1997 when the Dow closed at 7,161.15
    7,100 = 5/7/1997 when the Dow closed at 7,085.65
    7,000 = 5/1/1997 when the Dow closed at 6,976.48
  • On an intraday basis, the last time the DJIA fell below:
    7,500 = 3/12/2003 when it hit an intraday low of 7,416.64
    7,400 = 10/10/2002 when it hit an intraday low of 7,197.49
    7,100 = 10/28/1997 when it hit an intraday low of 6,971.32

Weighing on the Dow, General Motors [GM  Loading...      ()   ] is lower by over 12%, followed by American Express [AXP  Loading...      ()   ], and Bank of America [BAC  Loading...      ()   ]

S&P 500

  • Last time the S&P [.SPX  Loading...      ()   ] closed below 752.44 was on 04/14/1997.  It closed at 743.73.
  • Last time the S&P crossed below its intraday low of 740.61 on 11/21/08 was 04/14/1997.  It hit an intraday low of 733.53.
  • The last time the S&P closed below:
    700 = 10/28/1996 when the S&P closed at 697.26
    650 = 9/5/1996 when the S&P closed at 649.44
    600 = 1/15/1996 when the S&P closed at 599.82
  • On an intraday basis, the last time the S&P fell below:
    700 = 10/29/1996 when it hit an intraday low of 696.27
    650 = 9/6/1996 when it hit an intraday low of 649.44 
    600 = 1/16/1996 when it hit an intraday low of 599.08

Leading the S&P 500 to the downside, Ameren [AEE  Loading...      ()   ] is down over 14%, followed by AFLAC [AFL  Loading...      ()   ], and AK Steel [AKS  Loading...      ()   ].

NASDAQ

  • Last time the NASDAQ [COMP  Loading...      ()   ] closed below 1,316.12 was on 03/12/2003.  It closed at 1279.24.
  • Last time the NASDAQ crossed below its intraday low of 1,295.48 on 11/21/08 was 03/13/2003.  It hit an intraday low of 1,290.59.
  • The last time the NASDAQ closed below:
    1,300 = 3/12/2003 when the NASDAQ closed at 1,279.24
    1,250 = 10/16/2002 when the NASDAQ closed at 1,232.42
    1,200 = 10/10/2002 when the NASDAQ closed at 1,163.37
    1,100 = 8/1/1996 when the NASDAQ closed at 1,098.85
    1,000 = 1/17/1996 when the NASDAQ closed at 998.3
  • On an intraday basis, the last time the NASDAQ fell below:

Leading the NASDAQ to the downside, Steel Dynamics [STLD  Loading...      ()   ] is down over 12%, followed by Liberty Global [LBTYA  Loading...      ()   ], and NII Holdings [NIHD  Loading...      ()   ].
