As first reported in the Funny Business blog last summer, Russian metals mogul Mikhail Prokhorov agreed to buy the Villa Leopolda near the French Riviera community of Nice for nearly $1 billion.

Now, the 48-year-old Prokhorov reportedly is having money problems and wants his $80 million deposit back.

Good luck.

The Daily Mail reports that the current owner, Lily Safra, is refusing to return the rubles. "The deal was agreed in principle, and the money is owed to me."

The story claims Prokhorov's spokesman denies reports that the Russian has lost billions in the banking crisis, instead "insisting his boss would not do business in France until the authorities apologise for arresting him in a prostitution probe two years ago in the ski resort of Courchevel."

Nice.

Update: Mr. Prohkorov's name was misspelled in an earlier post.
