Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge: Winning Strategies

The Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge once again saw contestants trading on earnings news and currencies as well as taking some risks, but our latest contest had a new twist - ETFs.  We will walk you through some of the top trades of our three winners as well as some of the major ETF trends such as the PowerShares UltraShorts that helped our contestants profit in a down market.

Trades of the Top 3 Winners:

3rd Place: Debra Lewis

  • Total Portfolio Value: $1,301,867.81

Debra was the third weekly winner making a 99.40% gain for that week.  Debra was another dark horse in the Finals, and gambled on Financials similar to our second place winner and propelled herself into the 3rd spot from the bottom 10 as of Friday, 2/6
-Currency Trading:  Debra lost about $40,000 currency trading in the Finals
-Equity Trading Finals: Debra took similar gambles on Financials which paid off for her, similar to Bette Lockhart
*Debra bought Regions Financial (RF) on 2/5 at $2.83 and sold it on 2/6 at $4.20 making 48.41% 
*Debra bought Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) on 2/5 at $1.79 and sold it on 2/6 at $2.36 making 31.84%
*Debra bought Fifth Third (FITB) on 2/5 at $1.64 and sold it on 2/6 at $2.63 making 60.37%
*Debra bought Bank of America (BAC) on 2/5 at $4.84 and sold it on 2/6 at $6.13 making 26.67%
-Equity Trading Pre-Finals:
*Debra bought ProLogis (PLD) twice during her winning week 3; she made 26.48% from 12/1 to 12/2 on the first transaction and 34.81% on the second buying and selling from 12/4 to 12/5
*Proshares Ultrashort Real Estate (SRS) gained 25.8%
*Proshares Ultra Real Estate (URE) bought and sold twice for gains 18.91% and 14.15%
