Don't look now, but someone in the federal government is attempting a wicked sense of humor.
On the eve of St. Patrick's Day, those famously hilarious folks over at the Federal Trade Commission have decided to use an Irish jig to warn consumers about companies promoting "free" credit reports, reports which don't turn out to be quite so free.
The FTC has come up with a public service announcement which spoofs a well-known commercial for Experian's [EXPN.L

] Free Credit Report.com. For those of you who've missed it, here's the FreeCreditReport.com ad where the guy who got his credit ruined is now forced to sing in a band in a pirate-themed restaurant.
Now here is theFTC PSA, which also includes a band in a restaurant—except with an Irish theme. The PSA points consumers to the only website where you can get a truly free credit report,AnnualCreditReport.com.
"Beware of the others" the lyrics are sung with an Irish lilt, "there's always a catch. They claim to be free, but strings are attached! Their ads can be funny, so don't be deceived. Hold onto your money, there's one site you need..."
But when I went to AnnualCreditReport.com to check on my own credit rating, I was almost immediately asked if I'd also like my FICO score...for another $8.
